Directed by celebrated filmmaker Mani Ratman, Ponniyin Selvan is a two-part project, based on the classic Tamil novel of the same name. The first installment of the film released in 2022 and garnered massive response from not only critics but audiences also. The film adaptation of the classic Tamil novel has been widely praised for its excellent performances and breathtaking visuals. After the great success of Ponniyin Selvan, Mani Ratnam has now come up with its second installment called Ponniyin Selvan 2. STORY: Ponniyin Selvan 2 starts off from where it ended in Ponniyin Selvan 1. Nandini (Aishwarya Rai Bachchan) is ready to go all out to end the Chola Empire by killing the heirs. The audience also gets to know her history with Aditha Karikalan (Vikram). Does she succeed with her dangerous motives? Why did she intend to kill the Chola heirs in the first place? HIGHS & LOWS: Mani Ratnam is one of the finest filmmakers that Indian cinema has ever produced. His command over his craft is unparalleled. Just like in the previous part, the filmmaker takes audiences through well-choreographed battle sequences to the intense politics of palaces. Every visual that we see on the screen is breathtaking.

Thota Tharrani deserves praise for the rich production design. Cinematographer Ravi Varman and editor Sreekar Prasad make the film a classic piece of cinema.

Talking about performances, Ratnam is known for taking the best out of his artists and he does the same all over again. While he gives enough screen time to all the primary actors that we see in the ensemble cast, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Vikram stand out with their strong portrayals.

The film marks Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s big comeback to Tamil cinema after several years, and she has definitely delivered a class performance. In a nutshell, she has outperformed herself. Other actors in the cast are also phenomenal. The climax of the film is excellent and stays with you for a long, long time.

FINAL VERDICT: Deft direction, top-notch performances, and mesmerizing visuals make Ponniyin Selvan 2 a must-watch film. It is a kind of spectacle that you should not miss watching on the big screen. Take your family and friends along. Apart from direction, performances, and cinematography, excellent BGM and music by AR Rahman are the other highlights of the film. They take you to the period of the Cholas in a manner that you do not want to return to reality. I am going with 4 stars.
