Rashtra Kavach OM Movie Review Rating: 2/5
Ever since the trailer of Rashtra Kavach Om came out, one thing it immediately made crystal clear was that there is going to be a high dose of action and patriotism in the film. Both elements are there in abundance in this Kapil Verma directorial. Actor Aditya Roy Kapur, who was last seen in Anurag Kashyap’s Ludo on Netflix, returns to the silver screen after the smashing success of his last theatrical release Malang. Actress Sanjana Sanghi, who made her acting debut in a leading role with Dil Bechara, will see herself on the big screen in a full-fledged role for the first time. BollywoodMDB reviewer has seen the film and here is what he has to say about it.
STORY: Om (Aditya Roy Kapur) is a gallant soldier who has accomplished a number of missions ever since joining the Indian army. He has been tasked to work on a top-secret mission for the nation. However, as he is about to complete the mission, he is hit on his head resulting in the loss of memory. When he wakes up from a coma after a gap of six months all he remembers is a childhood memory of his father (Jackie Shroff) dying in a burning house. Kavya (Sanjana Sanghi) helps him find his house and slowly, a series of shocking truths start to unfold. What happens next forms the crux of the story.
HIGHS: The major highlight of Om is its action, which has been performed brilliantly by Aditya Roy Kapur. The actor impressed the audience with his action skills in Mohit Suri’s Malang as well, which was one of the biggest hits of 2020 before the coronavirus pandemic brought the entire entertainment industry to a screeching halt. Kapur looks impressive as a valiant solider. He seems to have worked really hard on his physique to look his part and that shows on the screen. The character suits him to the tee.
Sanjana Sanghi also tries to do justice to her character. Her character is not very layered, but she does get some good scenes and she performs them to the best of her abilities. Ashutosh Rana and Jackie Shroff are excellent. Both actors pull off their characters really well. Prakash Raj’s character looks a little stereotypical though. He is one of the finest talents in Indian cinema and it pains to see him in a one-dimensional character.
LOWS: Apart from action and a few performances, there is hardly anything in the film that holds your attention. The makers seem to have invested all their energy and money into designing sleek, jaw-dropping action sequences while ignoring other important departments completely. The storyline is sloppy and lacks depth. So much is going on but nothing makes sense. There are multiple emotional scenes that seem forced and do not touch your heart.
FINAL VERDICT: If you have a thing for high-octane action sequences, Om will not disappoint you. Aditya Roy Kapur has pulled off some jaw-dropping action scenes with panache. But is that enough? Certainly not. A strong storyline would have been an icing on the cake is what I strongly feel. I am going with 2 stars.
