The 2018 film Raid, starring superstar Ajay Devgn in the lead role, is set for a sequel. While Raid was based on the income tax raid conducted by the Income Tax department on Sardar Inder Singh in the 1980s, Raid 2 will be based on the real-life story of multiple raids at the houses and factories of perfume trader Piyush Jain in Kanpur and Kannauj.
Producer Kumar Mangat Pathak has confirmed the development, saying that Raid 2 is in the works with Ajay Devgn returning to lead the cast. The producer, known for bankrolling such successful films as Drishyam (2015) and Khuda Haafiz (2020), announced the project during a panel discussion at the three-day Kashi Film Festival in Varanasi.
On Sunday, Jain was arrested following a series of raids at his residence in Kanpur and residence and factory in Kannauj by the Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI). The raid led to the recovery of about ₹257 crore in cash, 25 kg of gold and 250 kg of silver.
The Finance Ministry on Monday said that it was the “biggest ever seizure of cash” by an enforcement agency.
