In a recent interview, Kashyap revealed how he cut costs in 'Gangs of Wasseypur.' He said that he and his co-stars Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Rajeev Ravi stayed in a 300-rupee-a-day dharamshala during the shoot. He also revealed that they shot the blowing up of a mountain for a shot as they could not afford to actually do it.
Despite its low budget, 'Gangs of Wasseypur' was a critical and commercial success. It was praised for its realistic portrayal of the coal mafia in Dhanbad, its complex characters, and its powerful performances. The film also catapulted Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Richa Chadha, Pankaj Tripathi, and Huma Qureshi into stardom.
