Bollywood Horror Films Are Vanishing, And The Shocking Genre Making A Comeback!

Bipasha Basu, Urmila Matondkar, Amitabh Bachchan, and Ajay Devgn were some of the Bollywood stars who delved into the horror genre in the early 2000s, giving fans chills. However, Bollywood is making a lot fewer horror movies these days. In October 2023, only one, '1920: Horrors of Heart,' was shown in theaters.

Many directors think of horror as a B-grade genre, which limits its appeal to mainstream audiences even though it's popular around the world. Established horror filmmaker Vikram Bhatt emphasized that big stars aren't interested because they don't want to play scary parts. He talks about the difference between being famous and horror movies, which focus on the scary bad guy instead of the heroic hero.

Reason Why Horror Films Are Declining

Sohum Shah, who is known for the popular movie 'Tumbbad,' says that the horror genre isn't used as much as it could be because it has a loyal fan base. The director of several horror movies, Pavan Kirpalani, complains that other filmmakers and producers don't support the genre, even though it's great for watching with a group, which makes it perfect for the theater.

A lot of people also think that the Indian film industry mostly makes popular Bollywood movies and is hesitant to try out other types of movies, like horror movies. Director Anees Bazmee says that he stays away from scary movies because they are hard for some people to enjoy, especially younger people.

The New Emerging Genre

Horror movies like 'Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2', 'Stree' and, 'Bhoot Police,' on the other hand, have given the genre new life. Pavan Kirpalani, who just directed 'Bhoot Police,' says that horror comedies are popular because they can appeal to a wider audience while still being scary. There have been a lot of horror comedies lately, but most people still agree that making a good movie is the key to success, whether it's horror or a mix of horror and comedy.
