Ranveer Singh returned to the big screen with Yash Raj Films' Jayeshbhai Jordaar (2021), following the box office debacle 83 (2021). With mixed reviews from critics and audiences, the social comedy was a box office disaster. The Divyang Thakkar-directed film was dubbed a massive box office failure after grossing only Rs. 15.59 crore in its domestic run.
Boman Irani says he doesn't understand why the film didn't do well at the box office, but he believes filmmakers can learn from the industry's current "flux." For the unversed, Boman played Ranveer's father, Pruthvish Patel, in Jayeshbhai Jordaar, a merciless patriarch who supports female foeticide.
In a recent interview, Irani said he's puzzled that a huge portion of people are suddenly discovering the film on OTT and questioning why it didn't function theatrically, ahead of his streaming debut with Disney + Hotstar's Masoom.
The actor stated, "We are in a state of flux. There are many variables to it. Jayeshbhai Jordaar is a great example. It should've done better numbers. I don't see why it didn't. There's a lot that goes in which we don't understand. The film is now on OTT and people are saying, 'Hey this is a nice movie, why didn't it work? Now, what can I say?”
The 62-year-old actor, who has been in the industry for almost two decades, concluded by saying that backing a film is a risk, but that he admires producers who believe in and invest in films even when times are tough.
