Madhubala, a legendary Bollywood actor who has been a fan favourite since the late 1940s, turns 90 on Tuesday. Although she is well known for her love of Dilip Kumar and marriage to Kishore Kumar, it is less well known that her first love was Premnath. In addition to her on-screen persona, she was also referred to as the tragedy queen of Bollywood.

Madhubala, who was born Mumtaz Jehan Begum Dehlavi, began acting at a very young age, making her screen debut in the 1942 movie Basant at the age of. In 1947, she appeared in Neel Kamal, a movie starring Raj Kapoor, Begum Para, and other adults.

Madhubala's sister Madhur Bhushan responded in the affirmative when asked if she was in love with Premnath before falling for Dilip Kumar and said in an interview, “But in those days, Hindus and Muslims weren't getting married. Today, times have changed. My father objected to their relationship, saying that he was answerable to the family.”

She continued, giving further details on how the Bollywood star moved past Premnath, “It wasn't difficult for her. It was a short-lived relationship. Both wanted to pursue their career. It was like boy meets girl and they start dreaming about a future together.”

Madhur has previously spoken about Madhubala's devotion to Premnath. She had revealed to Filmfare in 2013 that the actor had fallen in love with Premnath initially, but the romance had only lasted six months before it ended "on grounds of religion." Madhubala rejected Premnath's request to convert to Christianity, according to Madhur.

Madhubala later became close to Dilip Kumar, but the connection fizzled out quickly. Before they travelled for her treatment in London in 1960, she was married to Kishore Kumar. They stayed together till her passing in 1969. Doctors had given her two years to live before she travelled to London, yet despite being bedridden for nine years, she survived.
