Despite their breakup, Bhansali attempted to capitalize on their scintillating chemistry for films like ‘Bajirao Mastani’ and ‘Padmaavat’. However, Shah Rukh Khan was eventually chosen over Salman for the lead role in ‘Devdas’. During the filming of ‘Devdas’, Salman Khan was on the sets, and it was a time when he and Aishwarya were still together, although their relationship was on shaky grounds.

Amidst the filming, there was a romantic scene between Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai. Allegedly, Salman, in pain and visibly affected by their relationship issues, offered to perform the scene instead. Despite the emotional moment, Sanjay Leela Bhansali chose to keep the camera rolling and reportedly retained Salman's take in the final film.

In her biography of Shah Rukh Khan, journalist Anupama Chopra confirmed that the hand seen in the iconic song ‘Morey Piya’ from ‘Devdas" actually belonged to Salman, not Shah Rukh. In her book, she narrated the incident, “Salman Khan would spend nights lying intoxicated on the floor of Aishwarya’s trailer. One night, Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai were doing a romantic scene that required Shah Rukh to extricate a thorn from her foot. Salman was on the set, and he volunteered to demonstrate how this should be done. SRK agreed and as Salman did the shot, Sanjay rolled the cameras. It was a poignant moment: a spent, tragic lover enacting his own life for the film. Aishwarya cried. It was the last time the two were captured on film together.”
