From Adipurush To Kalank: THESE 10 Big Budget Bollywood Films Were A FLOP At The Box Office! (Details Inside)

1. Adipurush

The Indian movie with the biggest financial loss at the box office was ‘Adipurush’. The film grossed Rs 288 crore nett in India on a reported budget of Rs 770 crore. The film got a global nett gross of around Rs 450 crore, implying a staggering 320 crore loss. The film's overseas gross earnings are higher (just over Rs 353 crore), but that figure includes taxes.

2. Zero

‘Zero’ is without a doubt Shah Rukh Khan's biggest flop. The Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif, and Anushka Sharma film made a less-than-expected Rs 15 crore on its opening day. The film's total box office collection is Rs 196 crore. The film’s total budget was 200 crore and cast some of the biggest celebs in B-Town.

3. Kalank

‘Kalank’ was Dharma Productions' most ambitious production in 2019. It was a feast for the senses but not for the emotions. The big-budget period drama starred Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Madhuri Dixit Nene, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditya Roy Kapoor, and Sanjay Dutt, among others. Its stately setting of the pre-independence British era provided wonderful pictures of 1940s Lucknow, with the story circling around six people from different parts of the city caught up in a single storyline of love and betrayal, revenge and misery. Despite being beautifully framed and featuring gorgeous costumes, the story took a backseat. The movie was made on a budget of Rs 130 Crore but only earned ₹95.65 crore in India and an overall worldwide gross of ₹146.31 crore.

4. Samrat Prithviraj

The title controversy surrounding Akshay Kumar's film ‘Samrat Prithviraj’ made headlines. The film, which also starred Manushi Chhillar, grossed Rs 90.32 crore at the box office in India. The film, on the other hand, was made on a budget of Rs 300 crore. According to reports, it did not recoup its production costs.

5. Cirkus

Cirkus’, which was released on December 23, is directed by Rohit Shetty. Ranveer Singh, Jacqueline Fernandez, and Pooja Hegde play significant parts in the film. The much-anticipated Christmas release, however, underperformed at the box office. Despite a budget of Rs 150 crore, the film only generated Rs 61.5 crore at the box office.

6. Tubelight

Salman Khan's ‘Tubelight’ was likewise a box office flop. The film was inspired by the Hollywood classic Little Boy. ‘Tubelight’ revolves around Salman Khan, who plays a differently abled individual during the 1962 Sino-Indian war. Kabir Khan directed the film, which also stars Sohail Khan, Om Puri, Zhu Zhu, and others. According to Salman Khan, the film failed because audiences went to the theatres expecting an Eid celebration and instead left disappointed. At the box office, the film grossed only Rs 211.14 worldwide.

7. Laal Singh Chaddha

‘Laal Singh Chaddha’, directed by Advait Chandan and starring Aamir Khan, did poorly at the movie office. The film apparently failed to recoup its Rs 186 crore expenditure, earning only Rs 129.64 crore. ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’, on the other hand, drew mixed reactions on social media. The official Hindi version of Tom Hanks' ‘Forrest Gump’ includes Kareena Kapoor Khan, Naga Chaitanya, and Mona Singh in important roles.

8. Saawariya

Fyodor Dostoevsky penned a short novella titled 'White Nights' early in his writing career, which was made into a film by Bollywood legend Sanjay Leela Bhansali in 2003. The film attempts to divert the audience's attention with frame-worthy visuals, a nighttime style, and deep music. However, it is insufficient. In the film, Ranbir Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor made their acting debuts. ‘Saawariya’ was a critical and commercial failure due to a lack of substance in the tale. Bhansali emphasised the images over the characters, separating the audience from their emotions. Despite a budget of Rs 45 crores, the film generated only Rs 39.22 crores.

9. Jab Harry Met Sejal

It is unusual for a Shah Rukh Khan film to fail at the box office. However, it appears that 2017 was not the year for the celebrity. ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’, written and directed by Imtiaz Ali, the master of innovative and refreshing romantic comedies, centres with Sejal, an enthusiastic and colourful woman who accidently loses her engagement ring while on a trip to Europe. She meets Harry, a tour guide, who promises to assist her in finding it. The pair travels around beautiful locations and unique cuisine, forming an odd friendship along the way. Anushka Sharma and SRK both provided their trademark charm and on-screen chemistry, but the picture suffered from a sanctimonious tone and a slow pace. The movie only made Rs 90 crore despite being made on a budget of Rs 153 crore.

10. Bombay Velvet

‘Bombay Velvet’, directed by Anurag Kashyap, stars Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, Kay Kay Menon, Vicky Kaushal, and Karan Johar. Despite possessing a substantial mobster drama, the film was a huge box office disappointment. Despite a production expenditure of 120 crore, the film only grossed roughly 43 crores due to a weak storyline and much worse acting.
