In 'Gadar,' Sunny plays an Indian guy named Tara Singh. He saves a Muslim girl from Pakistan named Sakina, who is played by Ameesha Patel. This happens during the communal violence of 1947. Their love story grows as they get married, but they are horribly torn apart by things they can't change. Even though most of the story in the movie is made up, it is based on the real-life story of an Indian soldier called Boota Singh.

Boota Singh, who used to be a soldier in the British Indian Army, is said to have become a real-life hero when he bravely saved a Muslim girl named Zainab during the violent split in 1947. They fell in love, which led to them getting married. Unfortunately, their marriage didn't last long because the Indian government sent Zainab back to Pakistan against her will.

Boota Singh sneaked into Pakistan with their daughter to try to find Zainab. He was driven by a strong desire to be with her. But their road was full of heartbreak because Zainab had to break up with Boota Singh because of pressure from her family. Boota Singh jumped in front of an approaching train to kill himself because the pain of being apart was too much for him to bear.
