This 1996 biographical film directed by Shyam Benegal is based on the book 'The Apprenticeship of a Mahatma' by Fatima Meer. It tells how Gandhi's 21 years in South Africa deeply influenced him, shaped his political ideology, instilled in him a desire for justice and equality, and transformed him into the Mahatma whom the world came to revere. The film was made in collaboration between India and South Africa.
