Shah Rukh Khan and filmmaker Kabir Khan have a long history together. Both of them were college friends before Kabir directed SRK in Tubelight (2019), in which Salman Khan played the lead. In Khan's directorial venture, Shah Rukh Khan had a cameo. They both studied filmmaking at the AJK Mass Communication Research Centre (MCRC), with SRK being his senior.
In college, Kabir Khan would use Shah Rukh Khan's notes. He stated in an interview, “I was doing a Masters in Communication which was predominantly a filmmaking course. Before me, the most famous person from our institute was Shah Rukh Khan. He was my senior in MCRC. I used his notes to study. I knew Shah Rukh before he joined the industry.”
He also mentioned that he knew Gauri Khan at the time and that they used to participate in college plays. He said, “His (Shah Rukh) wife and I used to dance together and we did a show together called West Side Story. Gauri is a fabulous dancer.”
Kabir Khan also directed Shah Rukh in a Dubai Tourism ad. When questioned about the possibilities of a full-fledged cooperation with Shah Rukh during the release of Tubelight, Kabir said, “I would love to work with him. I have known him since college days in Delhi. We shot for an advertisement recently and we do speak about ideas. So, if there comes an idea, we both agree upon, I am sure we will collaborate.”
Kabir's most recent film, 83 (2021), was released in December 2021 and was inspired by India's victory at the 1983 Cricket World Cup.
