Sulochana Chavan, a well-known Marathi Lavani singer, passed away today (December 10) at the age of 92. The death of the Lavani Queen is being lamented by the entire country.

Sulochana Chavan, also referred to as the Lavani Samradnyi or "Queen of Lavani," was one of the most well-known Lavani singers in the country. The celebrity died at her home in south Mumbai from illnesses associated with ageing.

The entire country is in shock over the iconic singer's unexpected death. Narendra Modi, the prime minister, expressed his sorrow at her passing on Twitter, “The coming generations will remember Sulochana Tai Chavan for her monumental role in promoting the culture of Maharashtra, especially Lavani. She was also passionate about music and theatre. Pained by her demise. Condolences to her family and admirers. Om Shanti.”

Eknath Shinde, the chief minister of Maharashtra, and Bhagat Singh Koshyari, the governor, both expressed their sorrow over her passing, Smt Sulochana-tai Chavan was the undisputed Queen of Lavani. She infused life in the poetry and immortalized many Lavanis on the strength of her unique voice and diction. Her beautiful voice will live on for many more years. I offer my homage to the great singer and convey my condolences to Shri Vijay Chavan and other members of the bereaved family.”

Chavan has received numerous awards throughout the course of his long career, including the Padma Shri, the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, and the Maharashtra government's Lata Mangeshkar Award.

The Lavani vocalist, who began pursuing her artistic career at the young age of 6, received her first paid job when she was just 11 years old. She acted for Gujarati stage acts, Urdu and Hindi plays, Punjabi and Tamil films, as well as for local drama, theatre, and garba groups.
