The couple made the decision to separate in 2004. In a previous interview from 2005, the actor discussed his separation from Amrita Singh. The actor admitted to being in an unhealthy relationship where he suffered domestic abuse and felt unworthy. He claimed that he was constantly reminded of his worthlessness and that it isn't pleasant to constantly hear taunts, jeers, insults, and abuse directed at your mother and sister.
The actor, who at the time was dating the model Rosa Catalano, claimed to have discovered someone who gave him a sense of value and helped him heal. Although he wanted Sara Ali Khan and Ibrahim Khan, he disliked arguments over them. Even Amrita calling them Sara Singh and Ibrahim Singh didn't bother him. After his divorce from Amrita Singh, Saif Ali Khan struggled financially because of the large alimony he had to pay. The actor disclosed in the same interview that he owed RS 5 crore in back taxes, of which he had previously paid RS 2.5 crore. He was also paying Rs 1 lakh each month until Ibrahim gets 18.
Talking about divorce alimony, Saif Ali Khan said, “I’m not Shah Rukh Khan. I don’t have that kind of money. I’ve promised her I’ll pay up the rest of the money, and I will, even if I’ve to slog till I drop dead.” He revealed that he was left with no money as everything he earned from ads, films, and stage shows gave it to Amrita for his children. Said who was hounded by media over his divorce said “Let me die of shame. But please don’t kill me with a feeling of constant guilt just because I’ve had the courage to finally walk away from an impossible relationship to find some solace.”
