Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta, whose filmography includes such successful gangster films as Kaante (2002), Shootout at Lokhandwala (2007), and Shootout at Wadala (2013), is set to bankroll a biopic on India’s most controversial bar dancer, Sweety.
While Gupta produces the film under his production house White Feather Films, Samit Kakkad is onboard to direct. Kakkad most recently directed a streaming show called Indori Ishq which is currently streaming on MX Player.
For those not in the know, Sweety, who is essentially a man, worked at Topaz Bar in Southern Mumbai. His performances in the garb of a woman drew patrons from all across the world. Some media outlets report that the film is titled Topaz and will be set in the 1980s and 1990s when Sweety ruled the dance bar scene in the maximum city.
Confirming the development, Gupta says, “Sweety’s story has lent itself to a brilliant screenplay which I’m confident will translate into an entertaining movie. We are now in the process of working out other details.”
Gupta obtained rights to make a film on Sweety’s life about a year or two ago and the project has been in the works ever since. The team is currently busy casting for the film, which eyes getting off the ground in the first half of 2022.
