In its third weekend, Varisu surpassed the Rs. 200 crore mark at the Indian box office. After Bigil and Master, this is the third Vijay-starring movie to score a double century in India. Over the course of its third weekend, the movie made an estimated Rs. 9.50 crores, with the majority of the amount coming from Tamil Nadu at Rs. 8.50 crores. The run there has run out, so there was a significant reduction outside of Tamil Nadu from the previous weekend, but the hold was strong in the home state, with only a 50% drop from the second weekend.
The movie has made approximately Rs. 135 crores in Tamil Nadu to date, and it is expected to earn around Rs. 150 crores overall, making it the third-highest grossing movie in the history of the region. The movie's huge competition with Thunivu in Tamil Nadu hindered its holiday box office performance; if it had been released alone, the movie's earnings would have likely increased by 10% to 20%.
Every Vijay starrer since Mersal in 2017—aside from Beast—has essentially done blockbuster business in Tamil Nadu. The standard practice of using distributor ROI as a criterion for making decisions in trade only functions when the distribution rights are offered at reasonable prices.
Any movie that already had the rights sold at Blockbuster pricing cannot get that kind of recovery. The best you can hope for is that those prices are restored, and Varisu will work to make that happen.
The following table details Varisu's box office earnings in India:
Week One: 156 crores of rupees (9 days)
Week Two: 38.50 crores of rupees
Third Friday: 2 crores
Saturday the third: Rs. 3.25 crores
Sunday the third: Rs. 4.25 crores
Total: 204 crores of rupees
In addition, the movie has performed well outside of Tamil Nadu, particularly in Andhra Pradesh, despite competing with two major local releases. Even though this is a typical family drama, the Hindi dubbed version made a good contribution, crossing Rs. 10 crores nett. The dubbed market typically favours large-scale action dramas. If it is well accepted, one can anticipate large numbers from Vijay's upcoming film, which is being directed by Lokesh.
The following table details the distribution of Varisu's Indian box office receipts by region:
Tamil Nadu: ₹135 crores rupees
Karnataka: ₹14.50 crores of rupees
Kerala: ₹13.50 crores of rupees
₹26.50 crores for AP/TS
₹14.50 crores for the rest of India
Total: 204 crores of rupees
The movie has performed well abroad as well, earning ₹10.75 million (88 crores in Indian rupees) to date for a total worldwide revenue of 292 crores. It will soon surpass the 300 crore rupee threshold worldwide.
