Anurag Kashyap Biography

Anurag Kashyap is a bright and significant director , producer and screenwriter in the Bollywood. He has travelled a long route since his first directorial 'Paanch' which did not release. The talented director was born on 10th September 1972 in Benaras in Uttar Pradesh. He went to Gwalior's Scindia school and in Dehradun's school. His father worked in the state electricity board. He lived in various cities like Saharanpur, Varanasi, Gorakhpur etc. Anurag had a deep interest in films since his childhood. But could not take time out for films because of his studies. After finishing school, Anurag went to Hansraj College in Delhi. There, he took a degree in Zoology. After finishing studies, Anurag started doing street plays for 'Jana Natya Manch'. He got inspired to film making after watching the film 'Bicycle Thieves'.

Anurag then shifted to Mumbai to pursue his dream of film making. He struggled hard during his initial days in Mumbai. Anurag joined the famous Prithvi theatre and then Makarand Deshpande's theatre group. But all his efforts went in vain. Meanwhile he wrote a drama named 'Main'. It worked really well at the college festivals and Anurag's work was appreciated. After that, he wrote a script for a documentry named as 'Auto Narayan'. The script of this documentry was then forwarded to Ram Gopal Varma and he finally got a chance to write a full script of the film 'Satya'in 1998. The film was a hit and Anurag got an award for the best screenplay. Then he wrote screenplays for the films like 'Shool', 'Water', 'Kaun', 'Yuva', 'Dev D' , 'No Smoking', 'Udaan', 'Gulaal', 'That Girl in Yellow Boots' and then 'Gangs of Wasseypur'. He also has written the script for the film 'Black Friday'. He directed the movie as well which got lots of critical appreciation.

Anurag's film 'No Smoking' also got a rave review . He then directed the film 'Dev D' in 2009 with Abhay Deol, Mahie Gill and Kalki Koechlin. The movie was a modern version of the novel 'Devdas'. The film was a huge success and is considered as one of the masterpieces of Kashyap. Anurag has produced some movies like 'Shaitan', 'Aamir', 'Udaan', 'Shor', 'That Girl in Yellow Boots', 'Michael' and the recent movie 'Gangs of Wasseypur'. He has also produced Rani Mukherjee starer 'Aiyyaa'. He has also produced and directed 'Gangs of Wasseypur 2'. He recently produced movies like 'Chittagong' , 'Luv shuv Tey Chicken Khurana' etc.

The actor is married to actress Kalki Koechlin. He was previously married to his long time love Aarti for 7 years but later divorced. They have a daughter named Aaliya.

He is currently producing movies 'Lootera', 'Ugly' , 'Hasee Toh Phasee' and 'Bombay Velvet'. Out of these he is directing 'Ugly' and 'Bombay Velvet'.
