Karan Johar is considered as one of the most high -profile directors and producers of the Indian film industry. He is a very talented director and very skilled producer. All the films which he directed were blockbusters. He is a very good friend of Bollywood Badshah Shah Rukh Khan , Kajol and Rani Mukherjee. Karan is a son of producer late Yash Johar and Hiroo Johar. His family and Yash Chopra's family have a very good relations since long time. Director Aditya Chopra shares a close bond with Karan. Besides film direction, Karan is a very good costume designer and a screenwriter too. He always designs costumes for his favorite actor and very good friend Shah Rukh Khan. Karan is the head of the production house Dharma Productions which has produced many films. Till date, Karan has directed four movies which have been the blockbusters and were highest grossing Indian films in the overseas market. He changed the mindset of western public about the Indian cinema.
Karan was born on 25th May 1972 in Mumbai. He went to the Greenlawns High School and then did his graduation from the H. R. College of Commerce and Economics. He holds the masters degree in French language. He has been interested in cinema since his childhood. Showman Raj Kapoor, Yash Chopra and Sooraj Barjatya are his inspirations. Previously, he used to follow numerology for his films. But after watching 'Lage Raho Munnabhai', he left this practice.
Karan started his Bollywood career with Aditya Chopra's blockbuster film 'Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge' in the year 1995. He worked as an assistant director for the film and also essayed a role of Shah Rukh Khan's close friend in the film. He also helped Aditya Chopra in writing the screenplay for the film. Also, he was the costume designer for Shah Rukh Khan for many films including 'Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge', 'Duplicate', 'Dil to Pagal Hai', 'Mohabbatein','Veer-Zaara', 'Main Hoon Na' and 'Om Shanti Om'.
His first directorial venture was 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai' starring Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukherjee. The movie was a blockbuster and bagged total 8 Filmfare awards including best movie, best actor and best director. Then he directed the multi starer movie 'Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham' in 2001. The movie starring Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol, Hrithik Roshan and Kareena Kapoor. It was a family drama and became a huge hit at the box office. Then he produced 'Kal Ho Naa Ho' in 2003 directed by Nikhil Advani and 'Kaal' in 2005 directed by Soham Shah. Then he took a break of four years and came back with the movie 'Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna' which was also a blockbuster. Then in 2010 he directed 'My Name is Khan' starring Kajol and Shah Rukh Khan. After the success of 'My Name Is Khan' , he produced 'We Are Family' starring Kareena Kapoor, Kajol and Arjun Rampal. The movie got a mixed reviews from the critics and the audiences as well. In the year 2012,he produced the movie 'Agneepath' starring Hrithik Roshan and Sanjay Dutt and 'Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu' starring Kareena Kapoor and Imran Khan. Both the movies were a great success at the box office. His next directorial venture was 'Student Of The Year' in which he introduced new faces like Alia Bhatt, Siddharth Malhotra and Varun Dhawan. The movie was very successful and was declared as a blockbuster.
In the year 2004, Karan hosted one TV show named as Koffee With Karan. In 2010, he hosted the show 'Lift Kara De'. In 2012, he was the judge of one dance reality show 'Jhalak Dikhla Jaa 5' and another reality show 'India's Got Talent'.
Apart from directing, his production house, Dharma Productions has produced movies like 'Dostana', 'Kurbaan', 'Wake Up Sid', 'I Hate Luv Storys' etc. Karan is a very talented director and has bagged many awards and nominations for his films.
His upcoming movie is 'Bombay Talkies' which will contain four short films and he will be producing movies like 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani', 'Gori Tere Pyar Mein', 'Hasee Toh Phasee', 'Koochie Koochie Hota Hain' and 'Ungli'.
