Sanjay Leela Bhansali Biography

Sanjay Leela Bhansali is one of the very talented and hardworking directors of the Indian film industry. He has adopted his middle name from his mother's name (Leela Bhansali) as to give her a tribute. She has raised him single handedly as he has lost his father long time ago. He dedicates all his films to his late father. Sanjay was born on 24th February 1963 in Mumbai. He is a huge fan of yesteryears very talented actor and director Gurudutt. Sanjay has learnt the art of film making at the Film and Television Institute of India , Pune. He has started his own production house in 1999 named as SLB films. Besides directing films, he also produces the films and gives music for his films.

Sanjay started his career by working as an assistant with veteran director Vidhu Vinod Chopra. He was a part of the films 'Parinda' , 'Kareeb' and '1942 A Love Story'. His first directorial venture was 'Khamoshi - The Musical'. The film was very emotional and it got lots of critical accolades though it was not commercially successful. His second venture was 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam' with Salman Khan, Aishwarya Rai and Ajay Devgn. The film was a huge hit and it established Sanjay in the Bollywood. His next was 'Devdas' a remake of the yesteryears hit film with the same name. The film had Madhuri Dixit, Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai. It was also a great success at the box office and is considered as the highest grossing movie of that year. The movie won many awards and nominations and was selected for the Academy Awards for the section of the best foreign language film.

His next was 'Black' which is considered as his masterpiece. The movie won eleven Filmfare awards and was a big success. Bhansali's next was 'Saawariya' starring Ranbir Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor and Rani Mukherjee. The film was the debut film for Ranbir and Sonam. It could not do much at the box office and was declared as a flop. His next movie was 'Guzaarish' with Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai. He also gave the music to this film. In 2012, Bhansali has produced the blockbuster 'Rowdy Rathore with Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha. It was the remake of the Telugu film Vikramarkudu. He is currently producing one TV serial named as 'Saraswatichandra'. He has produced films like 'My Friend Pinto' ,' Shirin Farhad' etc. He will be next directing and producing the movie 'Ram Leela' starring Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone. He has given the music for this film and written the script as well. The film will be released in the November 2013.
