Seema Biswas earned a distinct identity for herself when she essayed the role of Phoolan Devi in the Bandit Queen.

Basics on Seema

Seema Biswas was born on the 14th January 1965 in Guwhati, Assam, India. Her parents were Jagdish and Meera. Her mother was a history teacher and was a well known name in theater. It was not long before Biswas took to theater.

Biswas completed studying Political Science at Nalbari College and then joined the prestigious National School of Drama.

She went onto become a part of the NSD Repertory Company and was noticed by Shekhar Kapur when she staged the play Khubsurat Bahu.

Seema Biswas' Films

Shekhar Kapur zeroed in on Seema Biswas for the role of the iconic character Phoolan Devi in Bandit Queen (1994). She won the Filmfare Best Female Debut Award and took up the role of a deaf mute woman in Khamoshi: The Musical (1996). Her performance won her the National Film Award for Best Actress.

She stayed away from roles which stereotyped her and handled varying roles in films like Company (2002), Pinjar (2003), Bhoot (2003), Water (2005) and Heaven on Earth (2008).

She will be working with Deepa Mehta again in Kamagata Maru which is about immigrants.
