Sonam Kapoor a fresh face in the film industry is an eldest daughter of veteran actor Anil Kapoor. Sonam has a very strong film background. Her father Anil and uncle Sanjay are actors, her other uncle Boney Kapoor is a famous film producer, her grandfather Surinder Kapoor was a famous filmmaker. Actor Arjun Kapoor is her first cousin. Actor Ranveer Singh is her second cousin from her maternal side. Actress Sridevi is her aunt. Sonam's mother is Sunita Kapoor. She has a younger sister named Rhea and a younger brother named Harshvardhan. Sonam was born on 9th June 1985 in Chembur, Mumbai. As a child, she went to the Arya Vidya Mandir and then received an International Baccalaureate from the United World College of South East Asia. Besides acting, Sonam is also interested in reading, video games, playing squash and painting. Previously, her only interests in films were direction and writing.
Hailing from a strong film background, Sonam always pursued a dream of being an actress. She started her career as an assistant director. She along with Ranbir Kapoor assisted veteran filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali in his film 'Black'. Bhansali saw a spark in Sonam and insisted her to prepare herself for making a debut in the film industry as an actress. Sonam worked hard and groomed herself shortly.
Sonam made her debut in the Bollywood with the film 'Saawariya' in 2007 opposite Ranbir Kapoor. The film could not well at the box office. But Sonam's performance in the film was recognized. Sonam got nominations at various awards and bagged the Filmfare Best Female Debut Award for 'Saawariya'. She then appeared in 'Delhi 6' opposite Abhishek Bachchan. This film too failed at the box office. She next appeared in 'I Hate Luv Storys' with Imraan Khan in 2010. This was her first successful film. Again her next film 'Aisha' with Abhay Deol failed at the box office.
Her next venture was 'Thank You' and 'Mausam' in 2011. Both the films went unnoticed and performed poorly at the box office. She then appeared in 'Players' by Abbas Burmawalla-Mustan Burmawalla starring Abhishek Bachchan, Neil Nitin Mukesh, Bipasha Basu etc. This action thriller could not create magic on screen and failed as well.
Sonam will be next seen in 'Raanjhnaa' with south star Dhanush and 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag' with Farhaan Akhtar. She will be also featured in the remake of the classic 'Khubsoorat'.
