In the photo, RM can be seen standing with a friend, who put his hand over his head as the two smoked along in public. RM deleted the photo shortly after posting it, but screenshots of the image had already gone viral.

The photo also sparked a debate about the culture of smoking in South Korea. Cigarettes are widely disapproved of in the country, but they are still popular among adults.
Popular K-pop group BTS is currently on a hiatus as members Jin, J-Hope, and Suga have enlisted in their mandatory military service. RM, the group's leader, is also expected to announce his enlistment soon.

Military service is mandatory for all able-bodied men in South Korea between the ages of 18 and 28. The length of service is 18 months.
