HBO Max Announces Prequel To Game Of Thrones Titled 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms- The Hedge Knight' (Details Inside)

There's more from the realm of Game of Thrones. HBO Max announced on Wednesday that it has greenlit a Game of Thrones prequel based on the author's Dunk and Egg books. The show will chronicle the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) and a young Aegon V Targaryen (Egg) 90 years before the events of A Song of Ice and Fire, which inspired the hit online series Game of Thrones.

The announcement was made at an event attended by Warner Bros, Discovery, the press, and investors when it was also disclosed that the HBO Max and Discovery+ streaming services will merge and be known simply as Max.

The series is presently titled ‘A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight’. According to the official logline, "A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unexpected heroes explored Westeros... Ser Duncan the Tall, a youthful, naive yet courageous knight, and his small squire, Egg. Set in a period when the Targaryen line still rules the Iron Throne and the legend of the last dragon has not yet faded from live memory, great destinies, formidable opponents, and perilous achievements await these unusual and exceptional characters.”

Martin will serve as writer and executive producer, with Ira Parker, who was a co-executive producer on House of the Dragon Season 1. Ryan Condal and Vince Gerardis, both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon veterans, will serve as executive producers.

Martin has so far authored three Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas: The Hedge Knight in 1998, The Sworn Sword in 2003, and The Mystery Knight in 2010. In 2015, the three novellas were compiled and released as A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

This is HBO's most recent Westeros-related project. Following the global popularity of Game of Thrones, the premium cabler decided to develop a variety of shows centered in Martin's world.

Following the success of Game of Thrones, HBO announced many prequel shows. Among the several projects announced throughout the years, the only one to have moved forward and been published on OTT was House Of Dragon, which premiered its first season in August 2022. Season 2 is presently being filmed.
