The Orange County District Attorney's Office has dropped all allegations against Justin Roiland, the co-creator and star of the animated Adult Swim TV series Rick and Morty. The district attorney's office spokesperson, Kimberly Edds, told NPR that there was insufficient proof to establish the case "beyond a reasonable doubt." 2020 saw Roiland enter a not guilty plea to two felony domestic violence charges.

In Orange County, California, he was accused of one crime of domestic abuse and one count of wrongful detention through threat, violence, fraud, or deceit. Roiland posted on Twitter to express his joy on being exonerated, claiming he had always "known that these claims were false — and I never had any doubt that this day would come."

Here’s What Justin Roiland Stated:

He continued by expressing gratitude for the dismissal of the lawsuit, but "at the same time, I'm still deeply shaken by the horrible lies that were reported about me during this process. Most of all, I'm disappointed that so many people were so quick to judge without knowing the facts, based solely on the word of an embittered ex trying to bypass due process and have me “canceled.” That it may have succeeded, even partially, is shameful. However, now that the legal case has ended, I’m determined to move forward and focus both on my creative projects and restoring my good name.”

Despite promising that the show would continue, ‘Adult Swim’ discontinued its partnership with Roiland in January of this year. Along with co-creating the show with Dan Harmon, Roiland also provides the voices for both of the major characters—the cynical, chronically drunk mad scientist Rick Sanchez and his continuously angry, innocent grandson Morty. Harmon will continue to serve as the show's sole showrunner while the parts will be recast.
