Rating: 3/5

One line Review: Kapoor & Sons is a slice of life tale that narrates the story of a dysfunctional Punjabi family.

Positive Points: Sensitive family issues are captured beautifully and presented aptly. The director has wisely handled the depiction. The character-sketch of all the actors is very well established which helps one in getting more involved in the film. All the actors have portrayed their part brilliantly.

Negative Points: Researchers say that about 85 percent of the families are dysfunctional. There is nothing very striking about the film. The movie illustrates family issues and states how complicated life can be if not handled appropriately. The comic angle looks forced and unnatural.

Kapoor & Sons movie still

Plot: The film narrates the life instances of a dysfunctional family who despite having all the problems manages to stay strong and together. Rahul (Fawad Khan) and Arjun (Siddharth Malhotra) are brothers who do not share a great bond due to past misunderstandings. Their parents Harsh (Rajat Kapoor) and Sunita (Ratna Pathak Shah) along with Daadu (Rishi Kapoor) are settled in Coonoor. Rahul and Arjun had to leave their jobs mid way in abroad and return back to their childhood home due to a sudden unfortunate incident at home. This is when the Kapoor family reunites after five years.

Trivial family moments of joy and sadness are captured aptly throughout the narration of the film. Tia (Alia Bhatt) plays a common friend of both the brothers. She lights up the screen with her presence every time she comes into the frame. Meanwhile Rajat and Sunita’s marriage is going through a rough patch and, the happy go lucky Daadu wishes for a complete family picture which seems difficult due to the nature of relationships in the family! All and all this sums up for the whole movie.

Direction and other Technical Aspects: The direction by Shakun Batra is exceptional and the narrative is smooth. The characters are very well established and are able to express every emotion impressively. The movie manages to keep the viewers hooked throughout. Although, the family drama lacks that striking punch, overall it sums up for a good treat for the family audience. The performances of all the actors breath-life-into the story.

Performances: Fawad Khan shines as a true gem all through the film. He perfectly fits the bill and essays his role with great conviction. He aptly expresses the emotional turmoil of his character.

Siddharth Malhotra did fair justice to his role. Though it is not a challenging role but, it is simple and real.

Alia Bhatt essays the role of a cheerful and lively young girl beautifully.

Rishi Kapoor as Daadu is adorable. Rajat Kapoor does a praiseworthy job while Ratna Pathak Shah essays her role incredibly well.

Music: Fun, pleasurable music and decent background score. Songs including ‘Bolna’ and ‘Ladki Beautiful’ are already topping music charts.

Final Verdict: Kapoor & Sons is a complete family entertainer and can be a onetime watch for all the family mates. The film touches the subtle realities of a family and relationships. The realistic nature of the film can work well with the family audience and the movie will be more or less relatable.
