One line Review: A detailed narration of the struggles and victories in the life of the Indian Cricket Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
Positive Points: Exceptional narration of the storyline that sums up to a great viewer experience. Powerful and appreciable performance by Sushant Singh Rajput. It is a pleasant and learning experience to watch the journey of the man who made India proud!
Negative Points: To be really straight here, the movie is extremely prolonged. Many of the scenes, especially the love bits could have been chopped off.
Plot: The biopic movie beautifully depicts the life story of India’s most loved captain cool Mahendra Singh Dhoni. The film takes the viewers to the journey of Dhoni’s life since his childhood days. The first half narrates Dhoni’s struggle about getting into the sport. The natural hesitation of a middle class father (Anupam Kher) seeing his child’s interest in sports rather than studies. The sequences depict every aspect of the Ranchi boy skilfully, be it the small town backdrop or the middle class family life.
Dhoni is forced to take up the job of a ticket checker to support his family but, he is highly depressed about the same. Later part of the film illustrates Dhoni’s jump from a ticket collector to being a successful captain of the Indian Cricket Team. How Dhoni risks it all to follow his dream, is precisely described. The skipper’s love life has also been highlighted in the film where his relationship with his first love Priyanka (Disha Patani) suffers a tragic end. Later, his love life blossoms when he meets Sakshi (Kiara Advani) and decides to marry her. All such detailed life incidences have been portrayed in the movie.
Direction and other Technical Aspects: Neeraj Pandey has done an incredible job when it comes to direction. The first half is extended but, is important as it showcases his major struggles in life. Dhoni’s passion for the sport, his unique charismatic persona and his intelligence when it comes to cricket, are highlighted aptly. The dialogues are on point, while the scenes are ideally written and executed. All the actors have performed their part exceptionally well, supporting the film in every way. The cinematography is good while the editing could have been tighter. A few scenes could have been dropped out so as to maintain the length. The love portions, including the songs also could have easily found a way out. Overall the movie is impactful and entertaining to the core.
Performances: Sushant Singh Rajput shines in the role of Mahendra Singh Dhoni. His hard work and efforts have certainly paid off. The actor has completely moulded himself into the character and renders a commendable act. His mannerisms, his style, and also his game resembles to that of Dhoni’s.
Both the actresses, Disha Patani and Kiara Advani do justice to their roles.
Anupam Kher as Pan Singh Dhoni is appreciable. He is just perfect as a middle class father who is deeply concerned for his child. He expresses every emotion with ease and precision.
Bhumika Chawla essays the role of Dhoni’s sister. She essays her part aptly.
A special mention to the role of Herry Tangri, who essays Yuvraj Singh in the film, his part is one of the high points of the film.
All the supporting actors and others perform a very good job and enhance the level of the narrative.
Music: The background score is epic and adds the required punch to the visuals. The both the romantic songs are beautiful and soothing. Also, others that are played at the backdrop to support the visuals are amazing.
Final Verdict: The Untold Story has been unfolded to inspire and celebrate the ace cricket’s life. M. S. Dhoni - The Untold Story is definitely a must watch!
