Rock On 2 Review

One Line Review: “Every Generation Finds Its Voice” and ‘Rock On 2’ has lost it!

Positive Points: To some extend ‘Rock On 2’ is aesthetically appealing. Given, the chic and suave look of all the leading actors and scenic location of North East.

Negative Points: Story has lost its track from the journey of a musical band to illogical drama.

Plot: Prequel ended on a happy note, uniting the band members of ‘Magik’. Eight years later, the band is again in split. This time it’s not for egoistic rivalry. But for circumstances they faced after achieving the stardom.

Aditya (Farhan Akhtar) has retired from the band and moved his base to the small town in Meghalaya. Joe (Arjun Rampal) judges a singing reality show and owns a bar. While, KD (Purab Kohli) manages the talent management firm co-run by Joe. So what about their band ‘Magik’? It’s abandoned, after a young artist committed suicide due their negligence.

The sequel is about reuniting the ‘Magik’ again!

Direction and Other Technical Aspects: The decision of bringing Shujaat Saudagar on board has dimmed the sequel. His debutante direction didn’t do justice to the film’s genre. What you get to see on screen are the scenes with heavily loaded emotions.

If the film had some awesome music, then the stretch of 2 hours 23 minutes would have been bearable. But we seriously mind the forceful insertion of dilemmas instead.

All these things are secondary. The major error is in its script. We were not expecting ‘Rock On 2’ to be based on Aditya and the problems in his life, but a film on the band ‘Magik’.

Performances: Before uttering a word on their performance, I would like to appreciate the cast for their revamp look. Amongst all, Arjun’s cropped hair and Prachi Desai’s short hair punk are the most liked ones.

Farhan Akhtar has died face throughout the film. His acting is good as well as his dialogue delivery.

Arjun Rampal comes across as a business minded man. He has pulled that arrogant attitude very well.

Purab Kohli is still the same annoying yet sweet KD. He would have a potential to prove, only if his role was extended a bit.

Shraddha Kapoor is the baby seen crying every now and then.

Priyanshu Painyuli’s desperateness to get his voice recognised has convinced his character.

Shashank Arora and Kumud Mishra’s talent goes wasted, as we see them from limited to hardly any frames.

Music: Only two tracks are worth a mention - “Manzar Naya” and “Tere Mere Dil”. While, others just come and go.

Final Verdict: If you are expecting the after journey of ‘Magik’ and its band members, then better give this sequel a miss.
