It is believed that Akshay Kumar starrer ‘ Gold ’ is a biographical film based on the life of former Hockey player Balbir Singh. Balbir Singh was in the Indian Hockey team back in the 1950s that won the first Olympic gold medal for the country as a free nation. Though the story and premise of the film are more or less the same as India’s victory, it’s not a biopic on anyone, clarifies Ritesh Sidhwani . Ritesh, who is also one of the joint producers of ‘ Gold ’ along with Farhan Akhtar , while speaking to a leading daily gave a statement, “It is not a biopic. It is a completely fictional story but it is set against a real backdrop between 1933-48 India about what the country was, the sports… about hockey. It is not based on any character.”
Further clarifying and talking about Akshay’s character, Ritesh said, “We have set it in real events so people (often) confuse it with a biopic. It talks about the era in which we achieved Independence and what happened with sports, (primarily) hockey at that time. It is not about a particular character and Akshay is not even playing (hockey in the film). He plays the manager.”
Well, when everything is now crystal clear, we hope we won’t term the film as a biopic anymore. Helmed by Reema Kagti , ‘ Gold ’ also features Kunal Kapoor , Amit Sadh , Sunny Kaushal , Mouni Roy and Nikita Dutta in the pivotal roles and is slated for the Independence Day 2018 release.
