So be it in slug phase, Bollywood never shy away from tapping different genres of film making. And, much like showmen of the industry are obsessed with making masala films to entertain masses, they also draw their pennies to produced period films to not only entertain loyal Bollywood audience but also for the sheer sake of passion to make great cinema. So, irrespective of the films and their fate at the box office here is the list of period films which follow stories based on the period prior to 2000 and appreciated by audience and critics.

Raees (25 January)

The story of a noble gangster, essaying his journey from naïve but intelligent bootlegger to being king of the trade while being intact to the values taught by his mother! The narration, attention to detail, the gripping cinematography is what makes this film an experience to watch!

The Ghazi Attack (17th February)

Despite being an average hit at the box office, The Ghazi Attack impressed critics and a class of cine-buffs with its performances, technical detailing coupled with intriguing story line. The film was a war drama where Indian Naval force fights back the Pakistani war submarine PNS Ghazi and safeguard Indian coast. One film worth adding to your favorites list!

Rangoon (24th February)

Rangoon was a love story based in the time of Second World War. It was beautifully carried and maintains every aspect of the entertainment industry at the revolutionary time of 1942. It was sad to see, it failed miserably at the box office despite featuring talented stars link Shahid Kapoor , Saif Ali Khan , and Kangana Ranaut .

Jagga Jasoos (14 July)

Although the story of the Jagga Jasoos is based on a fictional character, the story is based in the time of 90’ and also includes heavier subplot with reference case of case of Purulia Arms Drop and plotline that included reference of conspiracies exist at that time. The film received mixed reviews from critics but failed at the box office.

Raag Desh (28th July)

Raag Desh was the most detailed and gripping war-drama based in the time of World War 2 and depicts courtroom trials and sheer grittiness of the battle field of the era. It was helmed by the critics as the most gritty and realistic depiction of war front coupled with the great performance from the cast!

Indu Sarkar (28th July)

It was marked as Madhur Bhandarkar ’s come back on to his brand of cinema, as Indu Sarkar was the depiction of a victim at the time of National Emergency 1975 and how political atmosphere affects the normal day to day life! It is worth watching for sure, for the attention to the details and the power packed performance of the cast!

Partition: 1947 (18th August)

It is one of the unique depiction of the pre-independence era which shows what was struggles newly forming Indian administration were facing at the verge of partition between current India-Pakistan. All beautifully told by through the eyes of the last Viceroy of India, Lord Mountbatten, which will be in cinema this week!

Baadshaho (1st September)

It is a classic gold heist movie based in the golden era of 1975, with a gripping and action-packed story of a group of expert goons, who commit a gold heist while infiltrating Army base like a boss! Baadshaho is already making hype for its trailer and promises to be an experience, so we can surely mark the date on the calendar!

Daddy (8th September)

This film has already impressed the audience and critics with their initial outings who are looking forward to delving into dark, gritty, and the glorious life of infamous gangster turned politician Arun Gawli. The trailer itself has already garnered applaud for its realistic depiction of 80’s and early 90’s of Mumbai and in its gray shade.

Haseena Parkar (Yet to Decide)

From one gangster tale to another! Haseena Parker film will be based on real life Haseena Parker, who took over the underworld and empire left by her brother Dawood Ibrahim and she ruled the Mumbai city with terror and power! It is already touted to be Shraddha Kapoor ’s career defining performance!

Padmavati (17th November)

Though most of you remember it by the controversies it caused. But Padmavati is a fictional historical drama based on the life of Rani Padmini, who was the wife of Rana Rawal Ratan Singh, the ruler of Mewar, and the film will be based on 1303. Given the fact it would be directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and the star cast it features, it would be one film worth anticipating!
