Apart from his impeccable acting chops, veteran actor Rishi Kapoor is also known for his unabashed opinion and hard-hitting comments. The actor can talk about anything under the sun and has an opinion on everything. In one of his recent interviews, Kapoor said that the Hindi film industry is separated by two divisions of audience – the single screen audience and the multiplex audience. When asked if he thinks that his son Ranbir Kapoor is the one who spearheaded the movement when it comes to the availability of ‘different kind of cinema’ for the multiplex audience in India, he said, “I would agree that he took a different arc. Once he told his mother that, ‘I don’t want to work in films where I have to wear a baseball cap this way. I don’t want forty dancers behind me.’ You never see that kind of cinema with Ranbir. He has done things differently. I remember people coming to me and saying, ‘What’s wrong with your son. He is working in a certain kind of films. He will be ruined.” I said that I have no say in his career. I don’t say anything. If I had a say in his career I would have never let him do films like Wake Up Sid , Rockstar , Rocket Singh and Barfi for that matter. Talking about Barfi, once my brother came to me and said that, “He (Ranbir) is working in a film where he is dumb. Is he mad? Is he committing suicide? It is harmful to his career.” What do I say? But Ranbir proved everyone wrong.”

Adding further, the veteran said that he never interfered in Ranbir’s career. “I don’t totally agree with Ranbir’s films even today. But that is his career. I am from a different generation. My thinking is different. This generation’s thinking is different. I do not interfere in anybody’s career. My father didn’t interfere in my career, so I don’t interfere in his career. You will fall. You will learn. See, no actor’s career is 100% successful. Everybody has ups and downs. That graph is with every actor in the world. Cinema is something no one is assured about,” he said.

Rishi Kapoor ’s new film, Patel Ki Punjabi Shaadi , enters cinemas today.
