The project first went to Vidya Balan but she turned it down as she did not want to do serious roles at that moment.

If the report of sizzling Sunny Leone doing a biopic on Meena Kumari is true, it has to be one of the biggest stories coming from the lanes of Bollywood. Though no official confirmation has been made, neither by Sunny Leone nor the makers of the biopic, a leading newspaper reports that the makers of the biopic have Sunny on their mind for the role of the iconic actress in the biopic.
Sunny was not the first choice for the role. Initially, powerful actress Vidya Balan was approached to play Meena Kumari , but she turned down the role. “I narrated her (Vidya Balan) something but at the moment she is wanting to do something that’s non-serious. She has had too much of serious stuff. We spoke at length. Maybe tomorrow, I may have that kind of a script for her. But at the moment, I wanted her to play the role of an actress of the 1960s. The film dealt with alcoholism and tragedy,” said filmmaker Karan Razdan , who plans to helm the biopic.
