Noor Review | Sonakshi Sinha | Purab Kohli

One line Review: A balanced and sensible reporting to nurture the true spirit of the journalism is the key message delivered.

Positive Points: The movie brings the issue of sensible journalism where desperate race of gaining TRPs and covering sensational stories drive the world of journalism. Sonakshi Sinha as Noor does justice to the character while Purab Kohli as Ayan Banarjee and Kanan Gill as Saad Sehgal seem to complement Sonakshi’s onscreen presence.

Negative Points: While the movie picked up a very serious plot of loss of sensible media reporting, it kept hopping around many scattered issues around the lives of its characters. The movie ended on a temperate note and the overall unmoving message lacking a fire of deliverance.

Plot: Noor ( Sonakshi Sinha ) is a young, energetic and unorthodox journalist who finds it difficult to carve a niche in her career of journalism with the increasingly dull and boring assignments. The desire to grow vertical in her career with that “one big story” is all there on her mind. Eventually, she gets the lead story of a Human organ harvesting racket in which her house maid Malati’s brother was one of the victims. She tried to use this to her advantage of advancing in her career failing to realise the sensitivity and the risk of life associated with the case. However the story was tricked into plagiarism by the ex CNN reporter Ayan Mukherjee who publishes the big story in his name. All this while Noor’s Boss makes her realize how indifferent and insensible she turned just to follow her dream blanketing the risks associated with the story line. The double blow of the consequential killing of Malati’s brother and the shock of betrayal moved her to the core. Thereafter she decides to do a penance by bringing justice to the Malalti’s brother by posting a social media post with the title “Mumbai you are killing me”. This video goes viral, trending all across the youth, the leaders, the news agencies and every other corner of the society. The furore and the rage created online forces the government to take action against the racket mafia. The climax reveals the rest.

Direction and other Technical Aspects: Sunhil Sippy ’s directed movie has a reason to keep the viewers engaged in the first half. The typical struggle of an amateur journalist is relatable to many youth across the profession. There are many bemusing and light moments in the personal life of a girl with an ambitious outlook towards her life. The journey from struggling to love her life in the first half to learning sensible lessons and eventually loving and embracing her life has been very well captured. The second half of the movie takes a bumpy road in terms of direction. Some open ended and not completely befitting scenes could not bring the overall message of the movie with a very strong hammer.

Performances: Sonakshi Sinha does a good job in portraying the struggling life of an ambitious girl in the profession of journalism. She keeps up her character with a very good blend of light, funny and serious moments in the movie. Overall, she successfully manages to carry herself as the cynosure in the movie.

Kanan Gill : Kanan Gill plays the role of Noor’s supportive friend, who has been with her to encourage her in her deep blues. He carries off the character of self-made confident male, who owns a restaurant in London.

Purab Kohli : Purab Kohli has also delivered a good performance in the role of ex-CNN reporter turned photographer.

Manish Choudhary : Manish Choudhary has carried the role of a friendly and cool-headed boss, who also keeps mentoring his subordinate Noor, in difficult times, but all in a very peppery tone.

Music: The song ‘Gulabi aankhen’ has been done artistically, and has gained popularity among the youth. The song with Badshah that happens to appear at the end is yet another enjoyable number to tap your feet on.

Final Verdict: The movie altogether is a light entertainer, with a meaningful message that tries to engage its viewers with its simplicity. It is definitely a one-time watch to learn a few more humanitarian aspects.
