Babumoshai Bandookbaaz One Line Review:
A fast paced crime action drama of a cocky contract killer & his revenge game till the credit started rolling!
Positive Points: Well formed characters, gritty and gory action & Nawazuddin Siddiqui
Negative Points: Weak storyline compared to cast performances & some unnecessary plot twist!
Babumoshai Bandookbaaz Review Plot:
Babumoshai Bandookbaaz is a story of Babu Bihaari ( Nawazuddin Siddiqui ) who is intimidating, wicked, reckless, flamboyant in his own realm and one hell of a badass political-contract killer, who kills his targets not only because someone paid him to do it, but because he enjoys killing people in his own style. Once, while on the mission to kill some he met Bidita Bag and eventually fell for her! Meanwhile, his dominance over contract killing business is challenged by Bankey Bihari ( Jatin Goswami }, a competitor who says to be his fan but eventually wished take over Babu Bihaari! Added to his troubles, he is pulled into labyrinth internal politics, which end up him facing unfortunate after effects!
There are only a few countable crime thriller films in Bollywood that carry the storyline in a gritty manner as the way it is supposed to be. And Babumoshai Bandookbaaz is one prime example of these basic principles. The story of the film is set in Northern India, which has a clear influence over all the elements of this film like the way characters are and the way they linger around. Though still a fictional story, it takes many references from the real life political structure and the way power is maneuvered in the region, might be obscure to us but also serves a good base for the storyline. Though while watching the film you might find some twists in the story with strong character development as the film progress, such weak point seems minor and forgettable. Indeed Babumoshai Bandookbaaz can easily be mentioned as well made gritty crime drama in the recent time. You might feel to compare with the cult classic Gangs of Wasseypur, but it well set apart from it as it is edgier than the classic.
The story and the script of this film Ghalib Asad Bhopali , who seems to have made no effort to make narration of this film to tone down its rawness for a general audience, which eventually benefits the film as it gives a chance to present a story as realistic as possible. And in case if you are opting for the sensual scene of from this film, then get this heads up, some are erotic, raunchy and even rough at the time, while some can be cringe and hilarious at times.
Babumoshai Bandookbaaz Review Direction:
Although story wise, there were so many points where the director would have just followed the cliché and let the grittiness take over genre, direct Kushan Nandy managed to maneuver it and use such elements to good use. Though the use of some elements in the film might give cringe and also let the possibility to be scrutinized in terms of giving justice to the storyline line it seems okay. Definitely commendable attempt by the director to paint the story as it is and with all its glory!
Babumoshai Bandookbaaz Review Technical Aspect:
What most of the crime or action drama film in Bollywood lacks is the use of right storytelling with the help better cinematography and background score along with its gory details! Though background score for Babumoshai Bandookbaaz is average and complimenting, it is the cinematography that takes the cake. At many moments, camera work by Vishal Vittal just elevates the narrative point, when it is needed the most. Even some of the scenes shot from the long angles look ‘to the frame.’
Babumoshai Bandookbaaz Review Character Performance:
When you have a strong story that builds up the firm base for the character development, then it is an actor’ responsibility to pull off a stunning performance to match up the storyline, and not only Nawazuddin Siddiqui that impress audience but whole star cast delivers a stellar performance as their character evolves! Some of the notable performances from Jatin Goswami , Bhagwan Tiwari , Jeetu Shivhare were gripping and Divya Dutta surprised everyone with her full fledge negative role! Performances by other actors like Shraddha Das , Anil George , Murli Sharma were average!
Actress Bidita Bag also surprise everyone despite being debutante she played her role right bearing the north Indian accent with such a natural finesse was praiseworthy! There was nothing new or exciting about Nawazuddin as he was flawless as usual. His typical ‘I own this character’ approach was clear in his performance. There were many shades to the character of Babu Bihaari as he was terrorizing, creepy, sleazy, intimidating and ever dominating at times, and Nawazuddin Siddiqui performed exceptionally great.
Babumoshai Bandookbaaz Review Music:
A well most of the song of this album takes place in the background and only track that take Aye Saiyan sung by Orunima Bhattacharya, Vivek Nair make up to the silver screen, which was also fun to watch! Though typically films in such genre have plenty of songs and especially item songs to keep the pace of the film, it is good seen that screenplay isn’t disrupted by Bollywood song hangover!
Babumoshai Bandookbaaz Review Final Verdict:
Babumoshai Bandookbaaz is one desi neo-thriller crime drama which is stuffed with power packed performance wrapped in the gritty screenplay that might just soothe need to watch a fast paced action films.
