Ram Gopal Varma has lately been in news for his upcoming film Khatra (Dangerous), which has been at the centre of controversy ever since the director unveiled its theatrical trailer. Billed as a crime thriller, the LGBTQ themed film tells a passionate love story between to lesbian women.
Khatra was set to hit cinemas on April 8. However, the filmmaker claimed that theatre owners refused to screen the film simply because of its theme. He called the theatre management anti-LGBTQ and is now planning to initiate talks with them and convince them to release the film in cinemas.
Talking to a publication, Varma said, “Khatra (Dangerous) was about two women. Even the LGBTQ community and some theatres are against the film. I treated the story like how I treat my other films. Instead of a man and a woman, I kept two women in the lead. They want an explanation for the same. I never gave any explanation about a relationship between a man and a woman. Why now?”
The filmmaker went on to add that he is now in talks with theatre management and the members of LGBTQ community about the film. “I will work with them to ensure Khatra (Dangerous) releases in theatres,” he concluded.
As of now, there is no new official release date for Khatra, but we hope Ram Gopal Varma manages to convince theatre owners soon and the film finally finds its way into cinemas.
