Court orders Kantara makers to not play Varaha Roopam in theatres after PLAGIARISM row

Thaikkudam Bridge, a band from Kerala, had last week accused the makers of plagiarising their song Navarasa into Varaha Roopam.

Kantara the Kannada film by Rishab Shetty has been reigning at the box office for the past month. The film has been breaking box-office records of many films like the very KGF 1. Despite many other films like Ponniyin Selvan 1, Goodbye, Thank God, Ram Setu, and many more Hindi films running in theatres, Kantara still made it big amongst all these films. Celebrities both from the South and Bollywood haven’t stopped raving about the film. But recently, the film landed in legal trouble. A band from Kerala had taken to social media and shared that the music from the film Kantara which is Varaha Roopam has been plagiarised from their original song Navarasa. The band had also expressed that they will file a legal complaint in court against the makers (Hombale Films) of copyright violations.

An order from the Kozhikode Sessions Court on Friday, October 28, has now evolved into a crucial turning point in the Kantara plagiarism controversy. The court has now ordered Kantara's producers to stop playing the contentious "Varaha Roopam" song in theatres. The Kozhikode Sessions Court imposed an order prohibiting the performers from performing the song "Varaha Roopam" after receiving a lawsuit for copying from the well-known Malayalam band Thaikkudam Bridge. All of the main streaming services have also been told not to play the song.

The band shared a post where they mentioned that the court has ordered them not to play the song. Along with the post, they wrote the caption, “Thank you for everyone’s continued support. #navarasam #thaikkudambridge #bethebridge”

About the Varaha Roopam

Many people in the movie industry and music fans supported Thaikkudam Bridge on social media, stating their support for the renowned independent band's claims. Thaikkudam Bridge did not accept the Kantara creators' explanation that the two songs are identical because they are based on the same raga. The most recent developments demonstrate the music group's will to pursue legal action.
