The action thriller film ‘Jailer’, starring Rajinikanth, is the fourth highest-grossing Indian film of 2023, trailing the three Bollywood blockbusters ‘Pathaan’, ‘Jawan’, and ‘Gadar 2’. According to the industry tracker Sacnilk, the Nelson-directed film earned Rs 343.72 crore net in India and Rs 601 crore gross worldwide.
Following the success of ‘Jailer’, its producer Kalanithi Maran, the founder and director of the media conglomerate Sun Group, presented Rajinikanth, Nelson, and music director Anirudh Ravichander with luxury cars costing crores. During the festivities, it was revealed that Vinayakan, who played the formidable villain Varman, was only paid Rs 35 lakh for the film.

Vinkayak responded to these accusations in an interview with Sark Live, saying, "Contrary to rumours, I was not paid 35 lakhs for Jailer." I'm hoping the producer doesn't hear this. I was paid three times as much. The 35-lakh myth was the work of some miscreants back home. In any event, I got a lot more than that. They gave me exactly what I requested. I was treated like royalty on the sets and was compensated well."
Apart from Rajinikanth and Vinayakan, the ensemble cast of Jailer includes Ramya Krishnan, Vasanth Ravi, Sunil, Yogi Babu, VTV Ganesh, and Sunil Reddy. In the film, Tamannaah Bhatia, Jackie Shroff, Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar, and Makarand Deshpande make brief cameo appearances.
