2022 marked the best year for South Indian films on the screens. From KGF 2, SS Rajamouli’s RRR, to Rishab Shetty’s Kantara, all these films turned out to be the biggest hits of the year and left behind all the Bollywood films. While SS Rajamouli’s RRR qualified for some of the biggest awards around the globe, we have another film entering the race this year. Yes, you read it right, Kantara has entered the race to win the Oscars 2023.
The magnificent drama, which received praise from audiences throughout the world, has now qualified for the Academy Awards contention list under two categories. According to reports, both the Best Picture and Best Actor categories for the Oscars are up to the movie. Kantara has received two Oscar nominations, Rishab Shetty tweeted on Tuesday before the nominations were revealed. The categories for Oscar eligibility, though, were not mentioned. Taking to his official Twitter handle, Rishab announced, “We are overjoyed to share that 'Kantara' has received 2 Oscar qualifications! A heartfelt thank you to all who have supported us. We look forward to share this journey ahead with all of your support. Can’t wait to see it shine at the #Oscars #Kantara hombalefilms #HombaleFilms”
This indicates that the movie is eligible for members of the Academy to vote to advance it to the main nominations. On January 24, the nominees for the Oscars will be revealed. On March 12, 2023, the 95th Oscars will be presented.
Language is unimportant when the content is strong, as Rishab Shetty's Kantara demonstrated. Kantara was always supposed to be a Kannada-only movie, and thanks to English subtitles, it was nonetheless a huge success worldwide despite the language barrier. Later, the movie was released in Hindi and all of the South Indian languages. The background of Rishab Shetty's screenplay and direction, Kantara, is the Keraadi region in coastal Karnataka.
