Thalaivar 171: Is Rajinikanth Going To REUNITE With This Famous Actor?

Rajinikanth and filmmaker Lokesh Kanagaraj will collaborate for the first time in the actor's 171 film, tentatively titled ‘Thalaivar 171’. The latest word from insiders is that Malayalam star Mammootty will appear in the film, with filming set to begin in March 2024.

Many rumours have circulated concerning the film's casting, with names like Prithviraj Sukumaran and Raghava Lawrence making the rounds for quite some time. Though nothing has been formally declared, the thought of Rajinikanth and Mammootty collaborating again has piqued the interest of their fans.

Rajinikanth to Reunite with Mammootty?

For those who are unaware, Rajinikanth and Mammootty are not working together for the first time in their careers. Both actors performed pivotal roles in Mani Ratnam's 1991 film ‘Thalapathi’.

The film, based on the Hindu legendary epic Mahabharatha, starred Rajinikanth in the role of Surya, who was influenced by the figure of Karna. Rajinikanth starred as an orphan abandoned by his biological mother on a river since he was born out of wedlock and during her underage period. The youngster matures into a tough mobster who befriends Devaraj (based on Duryodhana), a prominent don of the region played by Mammootty.

The plot focuses on the protagonists' mutual connection and draws similarities from the Mahabharatha, with Devaraj finally designating Surya as his Thalapathi (Commander) and best friend.

The film, which was well-received by critics and a box office triumph, is still held in high respect and has achieved cult status in Indian cinema. Mani Ratnam's final collaboration with music composer Ilaiyaraaja was also marked with this film; since then, the director has exclusively worked with AR Rahman.

The claims of Leo director Lokesh Kanagaraj getting them both on screen together are guaranteed to create a big impression on viewers and increase the already high level of expectation for the picture.

Rajinikanth and Mammootty’s Work Front:

Rajinikanth was most recently seen in the box office smash Jailer, directed by Nelson Dilipkumar. Following that, it was stated that Rajinikanth will collaborate with Jai Bhim director TJ Gnanavel on a film tentatively titled ‘Thalaivar 170’. The film features an ensemble cast that includes Amitabh Bachchan, Fahadh Faasil, Rana Daggubati, and many others.

Mammootty, on the other hand, was most recently seen in the Malayalam film ‘Kannur Squad’, which was well-received by critics and was a box office success. Mammootty is also scheduled to return to the big screen with his next film, ‘Kaathal-The Core’, starring Jyothika.
